“Together for a better world for all: including persons with disabilities in development”

 

Inter University Centre for Disability Studies (IUCDS) is a prestigious centre of Mahatma Gandhi University conceived to be a centre of excellence in academic research and outreach activities. IUCDS conducted more than 65 seminars/conferences and other academic programmes. Besides IUCDS provides Early Intervention and rehabilitation services through its extension centre Disability Rehabilitation Early Assessment and Management Services (DREAMS). At present, Higher Education Department –Sanctioned new B.Ed. (Special education) course in Hearing Impairment and Autism Spectrum Disorder in the academic year 2021-2022.   In 2018-2019 in association with Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) Govt. Kerala implemented the project entitled “ Strengthening Emergency Response Capabilities of the Differently Abled People in Kerala” across the state. It’s a unique project which provides disability inclusive disaster risk reduction trainings to persons with disabilities. The project is now recognized as a model project by the Central Government  and developed draft national disaster management guidelines –disabilities and disaster in October 2018. Kearal is the first state in India to launch a disaster preparedness training programme for persons with disabilities.

IUCDS envisions a world which in there is zero rejection and full participation of persons with disabilities.

Mission

  1. To develop higher level professionals in the field of disability studies.
  2. To develop a holistic approach for the total rehabilitation of persons with disabilities.
  3. To establish advanced facilities and promote research and extension activities in major areas of disabilities.
  4. To establish linkages with National and International organizations for collaborate academic and research programs.
  5. To act as a Nodal Resource centre for disseminating information to the parents and the professionals working with persons with disabilities.
  6. To impart training to personnel of NGOs, parent groups, students, teachers, special educators and rehabilitation professionals.
  7. To address the physical, psychological and socio-cultural issues related to disability based on interdisciplinary studies for evolving sustainable solutions.
  8. To establish and facilitate parent’s self help groups.
  9. To promote employment to the persons with disabilities with the help of NGOs and parent’s self-help groups.
  10. To strengthen the regular school system to facilitate inclusive education.
