Projects sanctioned to NGOs

 As part of the extension activities, the centre sanctioned two projects of financial assistance of 2 lakhs to two NGOs.

  • Santhigiri rehabilitation project on ‘Empowerment of persons with disabilities (PWDs) through community integration. Thirteen grama panchayaths of Iduki district was the target group. Activities under the project included baseline survey, counseling services, awareness programmes, medical camps, formation of sahasangams, workshops, residential recreational camps for PWDs, entrepreneurship development etc.
  • Theeradesha Raksha social Welfare Society: project to provide vocational skill training for the PWDs for earning their livelihood.

  • Conducted trainings in Inclusive DRR for PwDs in the 14 Districts of Kerala
  • Trained 2667 Persons with Disabilities in Inclusive DRR
  • Trained 140 Trainers for conducting training programmes in Inclusive DRR

Community based intervention project 

COMPREHENSIVE REPORT OF THE STATEWIDE TRAINING PROGRAMME ON STENTHENING EMERGENCY RESPONSE CAPABILITIES OF THE DIFFERENTLY ABLED

  • Project Period: One year

Right to Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 emphasizes the need to have disability inclusive disaster risk reduction activities for the persons with disabilities. There are 7,93,937 persons with disabilities in the State according to the disability census 2015.   To equip persons with disabilities in disaster risk reduction, Inter University centre for Disability Studies is associating with Kerala State Disaster Management Authority in a project titled ‘Strengthening of Emergency Response Capabilities with Emphasis on Differently Abled People’ in the year 2016. The objective of the project is to equip the persons with disabilities to respond to various disasters or emergencies.

Three state level Training of Trainers (ToT) were conducted and around 140 professional were trained as resource persons yet. KSDMA has prepared training materials in Braille, Sign language videos, posters, brochures, IEC materials etc to better train the differently abled and a handbook on the subject.

District level training was launched at Kottayam on 19th March 2018. The training is planned for four days for four different types of disabilities viz. visually impaired, Speech-hearing impaired, physically impaired & intellectually impaired (care givers). Each training would be having around 40 persons with disabilities.

First of its kind in India,

  • First of its kind a university centre conducts such a project for PwD’ s
  • Appreciated by the United Nations
  • Recognised as a model project by the National Disaster Management Authority.

The project completed on 29 May 2019 and could train 2667 persons with disabilities in inclusive DRR.

RESEARCH PROJECT ENHANCING EMERGENCY RESPONSE CAPABILITIES OF CHILDREN WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENT IN SPECIAL SCHOOLS.
